Tomato Jam!

It’s the first time I’m making Tomato Jam for work. I’m really hoping it turns out well. Since I’ve never made it before, I’m pretty nervous about how it will turn out. I work with some pretty amazing Chefs, so if it turns out horribly, it’ll just show how much of a noob I am lol.

Before I took a look at the recipe, I had no idea how much time it took to make it, “Simmer for 1hr 15min” who honestly has time for that at 5:30pm? I really want to just go home, but I’m here, making this jam, haven’t eaten since breakfast, and all I’ve had since then is a can of Coke.. so unhealthy, and so just like me, never finding the time to eat.

Here after 30 min of simmering is the tomato jam. It’s probably closer along to being finished now. I accidentally forgot to turn the temperature down after it began to boil, so hopefully that didn’t do too much damage. It’s actually starting to smell really good.

I was really skeptical at first because the first thing that pops into my mind when I think of ”jam” is either strawberry, grape or even raspberry jam. I’ve never heard of tomato jam before, so when I started making it (which was actually a pretty simple recipe), and thought it smelled funny, I was expecting the worst, as I usually do. I really think it will turn out pretty good now!

Still, even though it’s smelling pretty good, it might just be the smell that’s appealing. Tomato Jam Might just be for people who have that acquired taste.

After 45 minutes, it has reduced to about 1/4. The color is not as vibrant as fresh tomatoes, but has turned a deep red color with speckles of tomato seeds.

Taste tested: APPROVED!

I was so worried I wasn’t going to like it because of the way it smelled, but its really good! I can’t wait until it’s finished cooking and cooled. I’m sure the consistency will change to become more.. Gelatinous? 3

Haha, or maybe the word is JAMMY? I guess we’ll see!

If your wondering why I’ve separated the jam in this picture, after tasting it again, we (a few co-workers and I) felt it Might be a little too sweet. We added a little more acidity to the jam on the right and found that it tasted MUCH better.

So there you have it!
Maybe we’ll try Jalapeno Jam next!
….or maybe not? Haha

RECIPE:

1.5 lbs of ripe Tomatoes (Cored and coarsely chopped)

1 Cup of Sugar

3 tbsp Lime, Lemon, or Vinegar

1tsp Ground Cumin

1/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon

1/8 tsp Ground Cloves

1 tsp Salt

METHOD:

Combine all ingredients in a Medium/Large Saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat and stirring often.

Reduce heat and let simmer for about 1hr and 15min, stirring occasionally.

Cool and refrigerate until ready to use.

ENJOY!

Just uploaded the WordPress application on my phone. This probably means I will be able to blog more.

I REALLY haven’t had a chance to do it this past year and have really been missing it.

I have a blog for one of my many projects, and its hard to have a personal opion on it, espcially since people say it has nothing to do with that project, but at least now if ever I feel like jotting something down, I’ll have somewhere to go.

hello everyone! i am typing from dianne feinstein elementary school. i am in blogging club! actually, i RUN blogging club. my students are blogging too! how exciting is that? its pretty cool, actually. they have a hard time writing about anything. i have to give them sentence goals – “I need you to write AT LEAST 5 sentences!” and they gripe about it. while i typed all of this, one of them looked over at my blog and said “geez, i would have only been on my first sentence!” 3rd graders are funny! another asked “how do you type so fast?” and i said “with practice.” =) i think my blog is over. i rambled on enough for the day=) THE END!

My First Blog with Blogging Club!

Today I started a Blogging Club with my students at Dianne Feinstein Elementary School! Boy, was it a challange! We spent lots of time going over Do’s and Don’ts, Creating Internet Safety Rules, creating Email addresses and Blog Sites! It was VERY productive. I work with a GREAT group of Students! Hopefully, they’ll use their blog sites at home and we’ll see wonderful blogs from them all!

Yes, people need options. Yes, people take advantage of other people to help themselves. But still, why don’t we do more than just pray for the people. If you care about the people, WORK FOR THE PEOPLE.

If ever I became pregnant, would I ever consider abortion? Its more than likely that I would not consider it.

Does that mean, just because I would not consider it, I wouldn’t let any other woman consider it. How do you make someone understand that it’s not just “taking the easy way out?” Does circumstance count for nothing anymore? Apparently religious folk/conservatives don’t see the circumstance that the child was conceived. Maybe all they see is conception.

They don’t see the 13 year old girl, pregnant from rape by her uncle, father, cousin, family friend, or any man.

They don’t see the poor who won’t be able to care for their child the way the child deserves.

They don’t see that a baby could jeopardize the life of it’s mother.

“Why can’t women who can’t afford children just avoid sex??” Sex is life.

Life moves in cycles. Long ones. Short ones. But it continues on, with or without anyone’s opinion.

tonight i felt EXTREEEEEMELY UNCOMFORTABLE.

my partner and i are in santa barbara for the long weekend. his family is from here and we visit his parents every once in a while.

every other time we are here, we visit state st, which is where all the college folks hang out on friday/saturday nights because all the restaurants and sports bars turn into dance clubs and bars.

the reason why i was so uncomfortable was because all the girls were wearing 3 inch heels, booty short-chest poppin out-hella fitted type dresses while i was in jeans………..

i tried going to the bathroom later on in the evening and 10 5’8-bleached blonde-short-boob dress type chicks looked at me, and i looked back, and i closed the door and didn’t even go to the bathroom. ugh.

i hate the way society makes girls feel uncomfortable in their skin. i feel uncomfortable in my skin… i know i shouldn’t.

i’ve always had a negative self image of myself since my doctor told me i was 6 pounds OVERWEIGHT when i was like 8. even if i did play basketball, volleyball, and ran at least a mile a day, i still considered myself to be fat. then when my ex started restricting what i ate, i started eating the things he restricted just to spite him.

if i could drop 40 pounds right now…RIGHT NOW, i MIGHT have a better self image. might.

its fucked up… i know.

We went to Santa Cruz Beach Board Walk a couple Fridays ago… It was SO packed!

The lifeguard station we were set up by.

Happy because we were about to get some cheese garlic fries!

We went to Santa Cruz on the 3rd for what was suppose to be a nice weekend alone and go camping after that, but we forgot that it was Independence Day weekend… boo-erns. We decided to spend the day at the beach then come home and try again another weekend. All in all, it was a pretty nice day. The weather was just right… I only got a little sun burned on my back (not like last time I went to Santa Cruz with LFS) and a little on my legs. Got to show off the skin art (which you can find on my facebook/myspace pages) for the first time – so liberating!!!

I am SO looking forward to it!

Sorry that I had to post an image instead of a video (which was my original plan, but youtube won’t let me=/). In preparation for the movie, I’ve been reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince for almost a week straight – when I mean “straight,” I mean riding on B.A.R.T. (Bay Area Rapid Transit) to work and back home. I haven’t decided on whether or not I’m going with some of my friends to see the movie in The City (San Francisco) or with my partner at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, but one thing’s for sure…. it’ll be SO on. haha=)

Lunar Siblings

Family is IMPORTANT.

More so this week than in the past, I have come to realize that my family is so important to me that the emotions I feel towards them jumble up my logic and over-ride my senses. It’s confusing, really. Who else could you be infuriated with, relaxed with, happy with, annoyed with, carefree with, perturbed by, grateful for AND with?

No one else but family.

It’s been such a trying week that I’ve actually MISSED my family (AT TIMES…. and YES… I actually said it). This week has made me come to realize that I am lucky to have such an annoying, healthy, noisy/nosey, yet somewhat tolerable family, that, in their own way, cares for one another — even though it might seem like we’re about to ring each other’s necks.
